| Abstrakt: | Next-generation firewalls (NGFWs) are an essential tool in securing modern computer networks. While there is a wide range of commercial products in this category, the open-source ecosystem lacks a functionally equivalent alternative. This thesis presents an implementation that delivers the defining features of an NGFW. The implementation uses a layered modular design, which allows integration of existing libraries (e.g. OpenSSL) and the development of new protocol processors or IDS modules. The modules can be flexibly composed into an evaluation stack through simple abstracted interfaces. Testing confirmed the system's NGFW functionality as defined in this thesis and quantified the performance impact of various inspection depths. The implementation can serve as a valuable tool in IDS methods research and also computer network security. |
